When it comes to leading an eco-friendly lifestyle, the first thing many people think of being plastic-free. With viral videos of plastic trash in the ocean, and staggering statistics about plastic pollution, plastics have become quite villainized in recent years. Many of my art pieces have even had a focus on plastics. But in reality, there is a lot more to leading an eco-friendly lifestyle than reducing plastic waste. While waste is a major consideration, but things like the production, emissions produced, and resource footprints of the things we buy are also important to keep in mind. For one example, glass...

After much consideration, I’ve decided to change my art alias! I started Kohola Kai Creative in 2015, and at the time I didn’t really have a clear direction. I knew my passion for the ocean, and channeling it through creative outlets was what I wanted to do but I hadn’t quite narrowed it down. I was creating handmade jewelry, painting and drawing in various mediums, and sharing some adventures from working marine eco-tourism in Southern California. Over time, I became much more dedicated to traditional artwork. Over the past few years I feel that this has become much more solidified.  With...

whale watching -

On Sunday November 3rd, I went out on an all-day trip to explore the waters surrounding Catalina Island aboard Pacific Offshore Expeditions. I had done an all-day trip with them the week before and had incredible sightings with a tight group of humpback whales. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  To celebrate this year's World Oceans Day, I created this collage of ink illustrations featuring a variety of ocean subjects!     It’s pretty obvious that I love the ocean, I hope that through art I can inspire others to love it too! Let’s all...

Orca names and classification tend to show up in comments frequently on social media and mentioned during whale watch tours. One thing I see often is “Orcas actually aren’t whales, they’re dolphins!” Fact of the matter is, they are BOTH!  Orcas are the largest member of the family delphinidae (oceanic dolphins), which is under the infraorder odontoceti, therefore all dolphins are toothed whales. All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins! And for the name part... some people don’t like the name “killer” whale. The name comes from fishermen that first witnessed them preying on whales, and called...
